Off Grid Solar Power-Basics

The grid is down and affects a significant number of communities. You've lost electricity and don't know how long till it comes back on. Solar power is an alternate energy source that is becoming more and more popular. For emergency situations, solar power can be a life-saver.

Solar Energy A Simple Alternative
http://modernsurvivalblog.com/preps/solar-energy-a-simple-alternative/

Well, as you know, it all starts by using the energy from the sun and converting it's energy to usable energy for us here on earth.

Basically, an energy unit from the sun is something called a photon (a particle that carries electromagnetic force). A photon particle released from the sun takes about 8 minutes to reach the earth. Contained within each square meter of sunlight that reaches the earth upper atmosphere, there are about 1,400 watts of available energy (called power density, or the solar constant). This amount is reduced to about 1,000 watts per square meter by the time it reaches the surface of the earth, in entirely optimum conditions. Additional factors further reduce this number, things such as atmospheric deflection and scatter, your geographical location, season, time of day, weather, and the efficiency of the solar energy system that you are using.

The trick is, to capture some of that remaining 'free' energy and convert it to something that we can use to assist our daily living.... ---CONTINUED---

Solar Electric Basics with Jerry Noel
https://commonsensehome.com/solar-electric-basics/

Solar electric, also technically known as “photovoltaics” (PV for short), is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. The predominant resource for this conversion is the silicon chip; the same kind used in computer cpus. Over the course of a series of articles, I will try to explain how a solar panel system (array) is installed, what it can produce, and approximately cost. I will also delve into many of the many FAQ’s involved with this science. ---CONTINUED---
