laundry soap

Post by scooter »

HI this is my first time on your forum- great!!!!
For laundry I use the following
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup castile liquid soap
mix well with 2 gallons of hot water
use 1/2 cup per load (you must shake the jug each time)
works well for us in all water temps.
Now that I have been using it for about 2 years I no longer mix it with 2 gal of water instead I mix the 3 ingred, with just enough water to make a very soft paste. I keep a plastic glass in the laundry and mix about 1 tablespoon with some water from the washer-pour it in.

Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent
http://foodstorageandsurvival.com/homemade-powdered-laundry-detergent/

I'm trying out some homemade laundry soap. Laundry soap is one of the items I was afraid I'd run out of on the 2 week no shopping experiment, so I thought it would be nice to be able to stock ingredients and make me some laundry soap whenever I needed it. Turns out it takes up a lot less space than standard laundry detergent, which is a bonus in our little house.

Here's the recipe: --- Continued at link, above ---

Adding Scents to Soap

anyone make homemade laundry soap?
* Link Unavailable. This site is no longer active and available to view on line. But the info was good and we wanted to keep sharing it!

 This is what I use.
  • 1 bar Fels Naptha (it's like a bar of soap for laundry, but has many other uses)
    1 c. Borax (20 mule team)
1 c. washing soda (make sure it is washing soda and not baking soda)
grate the bar of Fels Naptha with an old cheese grater

put them in a pot and add 3 pints of water ,cook on low until all soap has melted and add the borax and washing soda and stir until dissolved.

Pour this mixture into a clean 5 gallon bucket and add hot water up to about a little over 3/4 of a bucket ful and let sit over night.

Use 1/4-1/2 c. per load.

A few things:

You can make this a liquid by adding more water.( I don't because it takes too many containers)

This soap does not get sudsy so don't keep adding more to your laundry. On the good side it has hardly no surfactants or petroleum products which is better for your septic and the environment.

Depending on how much laundry I have going on a bucket of this will last me 2-3 months and costs me about three dollars to make. I don't count the whole cost of the washing soda or borax since you don't use the whole box in one batch. Let me know if it works for you.

 If anyone wants fragrance in their soap you can add essential oils while your soap is still hot and mix it in or a few drops to your vinegar if you use that as softener. I personally don't , but I do like to add afew drops of essential oils to the mix when I clean my carpets. I have a great recipe for a homemade carpet cleaner if anyone wants that. And once again it works very very well. Oh and plus I keep a small tub of the homemade laundry soap and a small scrub brush by the sink and we use it instead of Gojo or Lava to scrub the dirt and grease off and it works just as good!

My Homemade Laundry Products “Cheat Sheet”
http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/12/my-homemade-laundry-products-cheat-sheet.html

I’ve had a few people lately ask me about my favorite homemade laundry products. Well, I’ve posted about a LOT of laundry products…and I like them ALL, or I wouldn’t have bothered to share them with you.

But, that being said, I do have a handful that I use on a regular basis that instead of just giving you a bunch of links for…I decided to make up a “Cheat Sheet” of sorts. To be honest, it’s something I can use as much as anyone! I’m always having to go back to the original posts to find the ingredients and amounts when it’s time to make a new batch of something. Not that that’s a BAD thing! ;-)

So here is something I worked up that you can download and print out with all my go-to laundry product “recipes” on it (if you are so inclined.) I hope some of you find it helpful. (I know I did!) ---"Cheat Sheet" found at LINK, above ---
