http://thesurvivalmom.com/2010/01/12/warning-your-food-storage-is-incomplete-without-these-5-fresh-foods/

Think fast: What food items always seem to be on the shortlist when you head to the grocery store? Chances are, foods with the shortest shelf life will be on that list, e.g. milk, bread, eggs, produce. Rice and Beans, A Survival Combination
http://modernsurvivalblog.com/survival-kitchen/rice-and-beans-a-survival-combination/

Rice is rich in starch, an excellent source of energy. Rice also has iron, vitamin B and protein. Beans are rich in protein, and contain a good amount of iron and other necessary minerals, and the consumption of the two in tandem provides all the essential amino acids. It is no wonder that this combination is a staple of many diets throughout the world.

Although you will likely add other additional ingredients with rice and beans, having just…

(2) 5-gallon pails of white rice
(4) 5-gallon pails of pinto beans

…will provide 140 days of ‘survival’ calories. That’s technically more than 4 months worth of food! --- CONTINUED at link, above ---

http://shine.yahoo.com/green/forever-foods-9-cooking-staples-that-can-outlast-you-2456896.html

Most weeks, you make a big grocery list and head to the store, prepared to buy loads of fresh food to make your family's meals. We often don't give a thought to stuff sitting in the kitchen cupboard or we automatically throw out anything that's been in there longer than we can remember. But Janice Revell, co-founder of StillTasty.com, says "Look in your pantry and your cabinets and check whether the items really do need to go. You'll be shocked by what you really don't need to throw away."

-snip-

So before you throw out that years-old sugar or replace that bottle of vanilla that's been gathering dust, consult this list of "forever foods." You may be surprised how many of your kitchen staples have a shelf life of decades — even after they've been opened. --- CONTINUED at link, above ---

33 Essential Foods to Stock Pile
http://www.askaprepper.com/33-essential-foods-to-stock-pile/

There are many schools of thought on what should be stock piled in the event of a disaster or prolonged period of social disruption or societal collapse. It is hard to say with complete authority what “The best” foods are. This will depend on a number of factors, such as storage space, number of people to be fed, availability of water for preparation, availability of a means to cook foods or heat water, and the list goes on. There are however some standards that can guide pretty much anyone in the right direction. Just be certain that whatever you store, it provides enough calories, a dietary proper balance, vitamins, minerals, and fats. Remember, a crisis has a way of creating situations that will increase your caloric requirements, and that will tax your immune system and electrolyte balance. ... CONTINUED at LINK, above ....

10 Long Shelf-Life Canned Foods Every Prepper Should Consider Stockpiling
http://www.askaprepper.com/10-long-shelf-life-canned-foods-every-prepper-consider-stockpiling/

Stockpiling food is a key part of being prepared. Even if you have the skills and space to grow your own, you can’t be sure that a disaster will leave your crops intact and edible. Sure, you can recover from that, but it’s always best to have enough to keep you going while you plant and tend the next crop.

A lot of attention goes to storing bulk carbohydrates like rice, grains and pasta, or home preservation methods like canning or dehydration. Don’t overlook good old shop-bought canned goods though. These can have an impressive shelf life, they’re cheap and a well-chosen stock of them can add variety and nutrients to your diet in the months or even years after the SHTF. ---CONTINUED---
