You can also make one from a metal popcorn tin (the kind that might be a leftover from a Superbowl party). The object of a tight fitting lid is to create electrical contact in multiple places around the rim. You should lightly sand the contact surfaces of both the container and the lid to remove any plastic clear coat or paint.

The inside of the container has to have a layer of non conductive insulation that creates an air gap between the items you put into the container and the inside walls of the container. You might even put your items inside plastic bags to add additional protection against conductivity. You'll know that you have it correct when a radio or cell phone signal can't penetrate the container.

I have one of my friends saying he was using popcorn tins to keep his radios in. I decided to try a little experiment, I put my cell phone in a tin and called it with my home phone. It rang. I don't know if that's a valid way of checking for EMP security but if it lets RF in I think it would allow an EMP pulse. I told my wife about my experiment and later her and my daughter wrapped a cell phone in foil and THEN put it in the tin and it worked.... there was no ringie dingie. So maybe muliple layers will work.
